EC in the PC

Hey ladies,

I vaguely recall this being mentioned a long while ago, I think on someone's packing list, and it got me thinking. So here's my question(s):

Has anybody brought emergency contraception (plan-B or what have you) with them to the PC? Would you just go to the gyno and say "I don't really need it now, but I might later..." and they write you the prescription? And does anybody by any chance know how long the medicine would stay good?

Also, does the PC offer EC while in service?

Wow, it sounds like I'm planning on having a lot of unprotected sex ;-). I'm not, really, but I just like to be prepared.

Anyway, I know you guys aren't doctors, but any answers you have based on personal experience would be helpful.

Thanks!

I was not able to find anything specific in the handbook… However I am going to assume that yes the PC has Plan B (“Day after pills” etc) as it says in the handbook to contact the medical office if a condom breaks (they assume we’re all breeders)… HOWEVER… Depending on where you are (I.e. way out in insert country here) you may not be able to get to that pill with in the allotted time (72 hours?) So I dunno…

All I can tell you is what goes on in my country, but at each consolidation site for clusters of PCVs (and I'm in the middle of nowhere with it) there is an emergency medical kit in case you can't get to the Med Unit on time. One of the things in it is emergency contraception. All you have to do is call the Med Unit and get permission to take it since you then have to reorder it for that kit. PC is really good about things like that.

Sounds like from the above posts they give it to us but in answer to your other questions...EC is good for around 2-3 years assuming you get a fresh batch. I don't know what state you are in but that affects how your gyno can give it out but they should be able to write an advance rx. In Washington you just have to see a pharmacist. Now if there is a nearby Planned Parenthood (or the like) I'd go there tell them your situation and you should be able to get quite a bit for free or cheap. I intern at Planned Parenthood and EVERYONE at work has been like "Did we give you your EC yet?" I'm not straight which makes it even funnier to me. :)

i am planning to take some with me when i go.

if you want to get 1 or 2 in advance, planned parenthoods are generally very understanding about that sort of thing. at the pp clinic i work at, if you have an exam with us, you can get up to 3 packages of Plan B, no questions asked. (or, without an exam you can just lie, say you had a condom break and save the medication for PC.) we are currently giving out Plan B that doesnt expire until 4/2009, so you shouldnt have any trouble finding Plan B that will be good for the duration of your service.

also, another option would be getting on one of the types of birth control pills that can also double as emergency contraception. since the PC will provide you with your birth control, as long as you keep at least 1 extra pack around, you can just use it and not have to worry about getting to a clinic in time. this is the list of pills that can be used as EC:
